RankNations ranks the military and economic strength of all 196 countries — and tracks 19 active armed conflicts alongside the data. Every country — from the United States and China down to Vatican City and Tuvalu — has a full profile covering population, GDP, active military personnel, defense budget, aircraft, tanks, naval fleet strength, nuclear status, and proven oil reserves where publicly reported.
Rather than a single flat leaderboard, we break every country down by six categories — Manpower, Financials, Airpower, Land Power, Naval Power, and Strategic capability — and compute an overall score only when a country has enough real data across at least three of those categories to be compared fairly. For the 196 countries in this dataset, roughly 161 have individually researched or estimated military figures; the rest use a transparent, documented formula scaled from population and GDP, and are clearly labeled "Modeled" wherever they appear so nobody mistakes a formula output for intelligence.
Fleet quality matters as much as fleet size — a country with more aircraft isn't necessarily stronger if most of that fleet is decades-old. That's why country and comparison pages include a Fleet Modernity tier (Advanced / Modern / Mixed / Aging) alongside raw counts, derived from real named-equipment data for the 19 best-documented militaries and a defense-spending heuristic everywhere else.
Use the full country directory to browse and sort by any metric, the rankings pages to see who leads on population, GDP, tanks, submarines, or oil reserves specifically, and the comparison pages for pre-built head-to-head matchups between major military powers and alliances like NATO, BRICS, and the GCC.
